Transforming Maritime Decarbonisation Through Digital Innovation

As part of Task 5.3 in the SAFeCRAFT project, the University of Strathclyde is leading the development of a powerful Matlab-based digital tool designed to evaluate the performance and environmental impact of alternative fuel systems in maritime applications.

This innovative tool represents a significant step forward in enabling the maritime industry to make data-driven decisions for a more sustainable and low-emission future.A

Comprehensive Tool for Sustainable Fuel Assessment

The tool will assess both capital and operational costs across a wide range of alternative fuels, while also calculating the emissions generated during operation and across the full lifecycle of each system.

By integrating technical, economic, and environmental data, it will provide a unified framework for evaluating different decarbonisation pathways — helping shipowners, designers, and policymakers identify the most viable solutions for sustainable maritime operations.

Adaptable and Customisable for Real-World Applications

A key feature of this digital tool is its adaptability. It will be fully customisable for different ship types, system configurations, and operational scenarios, enabling users to explore a variety of configurations and performance outcomes.

This flexibility ensures that the tool can support a wide range of vessel decarbonisation strategies, from retrofits to newbuilds, empowering stakeholders to make smarter, greener investment choices backed by robust simulation data.

Driving Innovation Within SAFeCRAFT

This work marks an important milestone in SAFeCRAFT’s mission to advance data-driven innovation in support of the maritime sector’s transition toward sustainable, low-emission shipping.
