SEASTARS | 3rd Design Thinking Workshop

The SEASTARS project successfully organised its 3rd Design Thinking Workshop in Athens, hosted at the ATHINA Maritime Training Center, bringing together maritime experts and industry stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to ship decarbonisation.

The workshop focused on the theme:

“Visualising the Trade-Offs of Ship Decarbonisation Technologies: Space, Capacity and Design Impact”

The session examined how spatial visualisation tools can support decision-making during the design and retrofitting of vessels by helping stakeholders better understand the implications of different decarbonisation technologies on vessel layout, cargo capacity, and overall design feasibility.

Through interactive discussions and collaborative exercises, participants explored the following key question:

How can spatial visualisation help demonstrate the impact of new technology systems—such as alternative fuel storage solutions and energy-saving technologies—on ship design, operational capacity, and implementation feasibility?

The workshop provided valuable insights from maritime professionals, supporting SEASTARS’ ongoing efforts to develop practical, user-centred solutions that address real industry challenges. The feedback collected will contribute to the project’s work on innovative vessel design methodologies and sustainable maritime transport solutions.

SEASTARS would like to thank all participants for their active engagement and valuable contributions. Their expertise and perspectives play an important role in ensuring that the project’s outcomes remain relevant, practical, and aligned with the needs of the maritime sector.

The project will continue engaging stakeholders through co-creation activities as it advances the development of scalable solutions for greener and more efficient shipping.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Innovation Actions programme under Grant Agreement No. 101192901.
